Purpose
Our purpose is to provide an opportunity for serious basketball
players to excel in an environment of competition with the best
players throughout the country. We are committed to developing
athletes into role models by inspiring them to become leaders in
their communities. We prepare young women to become scholar athletes
through skill development, hard practice, top-level exposure,
tutoring and mentoring. We place an emphasis on teaching basketball
fundamentals and promoting teamwork, while displaying excellent
sportsmanship along with a great attitude. As part of the overall
growing process, these young ladies will gain new experiences
through travel, commitment and teamwork.
Parents have a significant role to play in this program and learning
process. An open line of communication between parents and coaches
is encouraged to help ensure that any concerns about their child are
appropriately addressed.
About the Palmetto 76ers
As part of the GA/LINA Lady 76ers program, which includes member
teams in Georgia and North Carolina, the Palmetto 76ers is also a
Nike sponsored program. And unlike many other programs, our players
receive maximum exposure by playing in front of college scouts at
various high profile tournaments throughout the year. Our teams play
Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), Nike, and other college exposure
tournaments around the nation.
Palmetto 76ers players are provided an opportunity to receive
college exposure nationally by traveling to some of the top
tournaments and camps in the country. Our ultimate goal is to
prepare players and allow them to use their talents in an attempt to
receive college scholarships. In fact, the GA/LINA Lady 76ers
program has sent many young ladies to various levels of college
play, with many receiving offers from top-level Division I schools.
Each year the team consists of players who demonstrate more than
just basketball talent. Equally important are such characteristics
as player development, academia achievement, team play, attitude,
sportsmanship, and the ability to relate with teammates, opponents,
coaches and officials.
History
The Palmetto 76ers was founded by Jerome Dickerson during the fall
of 2007 in Columbia, SC as a non-profit organization that operates
within the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) of the United States. The
start-up team consisted of a girls’ 12U team for the 2008 season.
The Lady 76ers Club Basketball Program was started in 1998 in
Augusta, GA under the direction of Kelvin Powell, Kenneth Griffin
and Charles (Chuck) Graham with a mission to provide the Augusta
area youth with an avenue for advanced educational opportunities
through athletics. During the 2001 season, the Lady 76ers was
recognized as one of the up and coming programs in the country by
Nike Grassroots Basketball. The following year the Lady 76ers signed
a multi-year contract with the world's leader in sports related
apparel and footwear. The Lady 76ers are the only Nike sponsored
program in the Carolinas. In the winter of 2006, the Lady 76ers
transitioned to new leadership under the direction of long-time
supporters Chris Stacey (Savannah, GA) and Sandra Dickerson
(Columbia, SC).
The Lady 76ers program is the most comprehensive program in the
south with a well-known winning and disciplined reputation with
colleges across the nation.
